Tetra Seminar
Boulder, Colorado
March 27-29, 2014

Build your Laban skill set with expert guidance
Instructors Carol-Lynne Moore, considered one of the leading authorities on the Laban canon of thought,  and Cate Deicher, choreographer and inter-disciplinary educator, have decades of experience teaching Laban Movement Analysis at undergrad, graduate, and professional levels. They are at their best helping people unlock the mysteries of human movement through the genius of Rudolf Laban’s ideas.

Three days of discovery and renewal
Each day is carefully planned to provide refreshing movement experiences, new perspectives on Laban’s key ideas, and opportunities to build confidence as movement analysts through live and video observation exercises.

Explore the Four Pillars of Laban Movement Analysis

  • Body.  Warm-up using Bartenieff Fundamentals. Start with the six basic floor exercises, then experience how their functional principles link to sitting, kneeling, crawling, standing, changing levels, and moving expressively through space.
  • Effort.  Explore the inner landscape of thought and feeling through structured work with the motion factors of weight, time, space, and flow; states and drives; and effort phrasing.
  • Space.  Discover the geography of movement space and how Laban created symmetrical spatial sequences that challenge body and mind.
  • Shape.  Uncover the links between body and space.

Encounter new ideas
Learn variations of Bartenieff’s Basic 6 that are seldom taught today.  Discover how Laban used the Law of Proximity to create “harmonic” effort phrases.  Find a quick way to learn and remember the A Scale. Trace the evolution of shape from Laban through Lamb and Kestenberg.  See how all these ideas can be used creatively to stimulate movement exploration and choreographic studies.

Hone your powers of observation
During the day, explorations of body, effort, shape and space provide live observation material.  In the evening, students are given links to video clips on the internet that are clear examples of concepts explored in the studio. These examples, which can be observed repeatedly, reinforce live observation experiences of the day to build the observer’s confidence.

Take away new materials for teaching and learning
All seminar participants will receive a free copy of Carol-Lynne Moore’s recently published textbook, Introduction to Laban Movement Analysis.
