Coming in early March — MoveScape Center again offers a unique opportunity to study Rudolf Laban’s masterpiece, Choreutics !
In this inspirational work, Laban articulates his understanding of the physical and metaphysical dimensions of human movement. And although his presentation is logical, many parts of the book are difficult to grasp.
That is why I have developed this correspondence course. Together with me over six weeks, participants read the first 12 chapters – though not necessarily in numerical order. Here’s why.
Choreutics is generally considered to address Laban’s notions of “space harmony.” However, only four of the twelve chapters concentrate on spatial form. Three chapters address the body, four chapters discuss effort, and one chapter even introduces notions of shape.
Consequently, as the course unfolds, we read chapters in clusters relating to key themes. I provide questions for each weekly assignment. These questions help readers identify major concepts and reflect on their own experience in relation to what Laban writes.
Not every assignment is simply about reading and writing, however. Several assignments include movement, focusing on notated examples in the book. These movement examples explore not only spatial form, but also bodily range of motion and effort sequences.
